Mary J. Sawyer, 86, of Topeka, Kan., and formerly of Morrowville, Kan., died March 8, 2019 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka. A funeral service was at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 14 at the United Methodist Church in Washington. Visitation began at noon. Rev. Dan Norwood officiated. Gina Miller was organist and Stacie Sawyer sang "Come to Jesus." The congregation sang "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace." The pallbearers were Kevin Hogan, Dennis Brungardt, Travis Brungardt, Cody Nichols, Donovan Smith and Scott Huss. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Mary was born August 3, 1932 at Fairbury, Neb., to William and Mildred (Singleton) Huss. On January 17, 1950, she was united in marriage to Junior F. Sawyer at Fairbury. She was a farm wife and homemaker. Mary was a member of the Morrowville Methodist church before transferring to the United Methodist Church in Washington. She was active in the church and sang with the choir. Cooking, sewing and caring for her family were important to her. She made her daughters wedding dresses and enjoyed quilting. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Junior in 2009; sisters, Betty Meyer, Corene Mees, Norma Jean Becker and Geraldene Frank; and brother, Leslie Huss. Survivors include her children, Christy (Dennis) Brungardt, Shawnee, Kan., Debbie (Kevin) Hogan, Topeka, and Mark (Mary) Sawyer, Burr Oak, Kan.; six grandchildren, Marilea Brungardt, Travis Brungardt, Rebecca Moore, Rachel Pope, Stefanie Gonzalez and Stacie Sawyer; fourteen great-grandchildren; and brother, Roger (Rosalie) Huss, Milford, Neb. A memorial fund is established to Edith’s House or Aldersgate Village. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington, Kan.
