Marvin LeRoy Van Winkle, 97,Washington, died Friday, February 25, 2022 at Hanover Hospital/ LongTerm Care Unit. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2022 at the United Methodist Church in Washington. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time at the church. Pallbearers are Warren Bledsoe, David Bledsoe, Howard Van Winkle, Larry Van Winkle, Walter Pitts and Louie Hartbauer. Honorary Pallbearers are Jennie Stricklin, Karrie Van Winkle, Skyler Ballman, Jaydon Ballman and Ashlyn Ballman. Burial will be in the Washington City Cemetery. A lunch will be served at church following service at cemetery. Marvin was born February 2, 1925 at the family farm in Strawberry Township, rural Linn to Frank and Florence Lucile (McClaughry) Van Winkle. He grew up on the family farm, attended country school as a youth, graduated from Linn Rural High School. On May 4th, 1947, Marvin was united in marriage to Frances Rose Oestreich at the Linn United Methodist Church. Marvin and Frances loved living on their family farm Northwest of Linn. They were blessed with five children. Marvin served on the Strawberry Township Board and the Reiter Cemetery board. While living the rural life, his passion was the cows, dairy farm as well as hogs, chickens. tending to the fields, with combine, all the tractors, and the skid loader. Also having the neighbors, friends, visiting family members over to enjoy homemade ice cream and vice versa almost weekly throughout the summer! In 1985 Marvin and Frances moved to Washington. Marvin worked for Linn Post & Pipe and traveled throughout the country making deliveries to many different states which he enjoyed. He also worked for Washington County Noxious Weed Department. Marvin and Frances enjoyed attending the Washington Methodist Church after the closing of the Linn United Methodist Church . Frances preceded him in death in March, 2006. Marvin remarried on December 14, 2008 to Maxine Hill. With Maxine, he accompanied her to craft shows where she sold many, many craft items which she made -as well as accompanying him to farm while cutting down trees, etc., etc. They also made trips to Colorado to see Wilbur & Nona Van Winkle as well as a couple trips to Ohio to visit granddaughter Jennie and other cousins to our family. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Frances; sons, Perry Van Winkle and Gary Van Winkle, sister, Eileen Bledsoe; and brother-in-law, Milton Bledsoe; and grandson, Michael Van Winkle. Survivors include his wife, Maxine Van Winkle; children, Wanda (Jim) Leppla, Topeka, Robert (Karen)Van Winkle, Corning, Rose (Don) Ballman, Marysville; brother, Wilbur (Nona) Van Winkle , Grand Junction, Colo; two step children, Rita (Don) Richardson, John (Lori) Hill; a step brother, Lester (Vernita) Messing; five grandchildren, Jennie (Tony) Stricklin, Karrie Van Winkle, Skyler Ballman, Jaydon Ballman and Ashlyn Ballman; two step grandchildren, David Hill and Courtney (Adam) Furley; and 3 great grandchildren, Joshua Stricklin, Anna Stricklin and Alisa Stricklin. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to the Washington United Methodist Church or Washington County Historical Society.
