Lonnie J. Leidig, 72, of Washington, Kan., died March 3, 2019 at his home. Visitation was Thursday, March 7, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral service was 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 8, at the Washington United Methodist Church. Rev. Dan Norwood and Rev. Ron Brown officiated. Gina Miller was pianist and the congregation sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Amazing Grace.” Pallbearers were Trent Tuma, Corbin Leidig, Tracy Scheetz, Gene Shoreman, Scott Crain and Brent Blomberg.. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Miller, Paul Juenemann, Jim Burton, Charles Huber, Tony Scheer, Clifford Elder and Frank Borden. Burial was in Washington City Cemetery. Lonnie was born on May 21, 1946 at Fairbury, Neb. to Cecil and Dorothy (Finch) Leidig. He graduated Washington High School in 1964 and was a lifelong farmer. Lonnie farmed with his father, Cecil and his Grandfather Purl in the earlier years and then with his two sons, Jeremy and Matt, until his death. On May 19, 1973, he married Peggy Ostermeyer at Bates City, MO. They were blessed with four children, Chad, Jeremy, Matt and Amy. Lonnie served as the Highland Township Board Trustee for twenty-three years. He enjoyed working and raising Belgian and quarter horses with his dad, attending horse auctions and horse shows. In the later years, he enjoyed the simple things like farming with his sons, attending farm auctions and driving the country roads checking the crops and his cattle. Lonnie liked to visit with his neighbors and friends and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Linda Leidig and Celia Schmidt; and brother-in-laws, Bill Shorman, Ernest Scheetz and Bob Boston. Survivors include his wife, Peggy; sons, Chad (Brandy) Leidig, Odessa, MO, Jeremy Leidig, Matt Leidig, both of Washington; daughter, Amy (Robert) Tuma, Morrowville; sisters, Joyal Crain, Marvel Boston, both of Manhattan, Carol Shorman, Green, Zetta Scheetz, Washington, Wilma Leidig (Maceo) Chesapeake Beach, MD; brother, Jerry Leidig, Salina; and brother-in-law, Richard Schmidt, Western, NE; and five grandchildren, Brooke Tuma, Trent Tuma, Sierra Leidig, Corbin Leidig and Abbry, Liedig. A memorial fund has been established to Meadowlark Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
