Laverta Dee King, 74, of Washington, Kan., died January 18, 2019 at the Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Visitation was Tuesday, January 22, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 23 at the Washington Presbyterian Church. Rev. Shannon Borgman, Gary Phillips and Rev. Marilyn Sweet officiated. Sheila Ouellette and Bryan Reiners were the musicians. Hymns were :Surely the Presence," "Blessed Assurance," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Doxology" and "The Lord's Prayer." The pallbearers were Todd Hynek, Darin Hynek, Billy Hynek, Russ Slater, Dr. Russell King and Joe Lecuyer; all nephews. Private family burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Dee was born July 23, 1944 near Morrowville, Kan. In 1962, she graduated from Morrowville Rural High School. On October 3, 1963 she married Robert “Bob” King in the United Methodist Church in Morrowville. For the next 7 ½ years her and Bob were “in” the U.S. Navy while Bob served. They then lived in Beloit, Kan., before moving to Washington. Dee worked at Washington Lumber as a book keeper and office manager for 36 years before retiring. She volunteered at the Washington County Historical and Genealogy Society, Washington Museum, Hearts & Things, Edith’s House and the First United Presbyterian Church where she was a leader and dedicated volunteer serving on many committees as a member. She enjoyed singing, reading and was a Kansas State University basketball fan. Grandma Dee was very involved with her kids and grandkids and enjoyed keeping up with their adventures. Dee was always busy cooking, cleaning and making people feel welcome. She also enjoyed going to visit her many friends, unless they had a cat . She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd & Freida Mooren; and sister, Patricia “Patty” Hynek. Survivors include her husband, Bob; two sons, Brend (Kathy) King, Wathena, Kan., and Michael (Stacey) King, Shawnee, Kan.; sister, Bertie (Don) Slater, Morrowville; brother, Jim Mooren, Morrowville; and four grandchildren, Johanna (Kurt Foley) King, Nathan (Lauren) King, Skyler King and Makayla King. A memorial fund has been established to Hearts & Things in Washington. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
