Julia R. Root, 89, of Washington, KS, died July 29, 2020 at the Linn Community Nursing Home. Visitation was Saturday, August 1, from 9-11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Washington followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Jill Duis PMA officiated. Sheila Ouellette was organist and the congregation sang “Amazing Grace,” “Beautiful Savior” and “On Eagles Wings.” Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Julia was born on May 1, 1931 in Hollenberg to John W. and Barbara (Steinlein) Ahlers. She attended school in Hollenberg and graduated Hollenberg High School. On December 24, 1950, she was united in marriage to Harold “Buss” Root at the United Methodist Church in Washington. Harold served in the U.S. Air Force and they were stationed at different bases, Wichita, Bellevue, NE and St. Louis, MO. In 1974, they moved back to Washington. Julia enjoyed baking, playing cards writing poems and quilting with the church ladies group. She belonged to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and played in the bell choir. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Harold in 2001; brothers, infant Bernard Ahlers and Noel Ahlers; sisters, Lucille Ahlers, Dorothy Meyer, Lois Scheele, Naomi Knuppel, Anna May Herda and Ruth Funke. Survivors include son, Randy (Kathy) Root, Glen Carbon, IL; daughter, Sue Schindler, O’Fallon, IL; five grandchildren, Tim (Julie) Root, Lindsey (Bobby) Vaughn, Kendra (Cody) Clark, Jason (Jessi) Schindler, Kayla (Allan Kellerman) Mitchener and nine great grandchildren, Abigail Root, Addison Root, Holden Root, Amelia Rapien, Clayton Clark, Alice Schindler, Riley Vaughn, Paige Mitchener and Liam Kellerman. A memorial fund is established to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Disabled American Veterans Charity. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home. Funeral of Julia Root
