John Richard Walter, 67, of Greenleaf, Kan., died Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the Washington County Hospital. Visitation was Thursday, December 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf. A rosary service followed at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 28 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Joseph Kieffer officiated. Hymns were “Be Not Afraid,” “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagles Wings,” “Song of Farewell” and “How Great Thou Art.” Carolyn Osborne was organist. The pallbearers were Jason Hoover, Clint Walter, Curtis Walter, Colby Walter, Travis Laflen, Chris Laflen and Kevin Laflen. The honorary pallbearers were Hanna Bott, Evan Bott, Macy Ohlde, Ellie Ohlde, Madison Ohlde, Elizabeth Ohlde, Alyssa Kern and Joseph Kern. Burial was in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Kimeo. John was born May 10, 1951 at Concordia, Kan., to Leonard and Bonnie (Downey) Walter. In 1969, he graduated from Linn High School. He farmed and raised mostly Hereford cattle his entire life near Kimeo. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and 3D archery shooting. John was a past volunteer fireman. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Mary Catherine Walter; and infant brother, Robert Walter. Survivors include his wife, Sally; daughters, Linda (Darren) Bott, Palmer, Lori (John) Ohlde, Fairbury, NE, and Lisa (John) Kern, Washington; sisters, Lenar (Terry) Hoover, and Marilyn (Ron) Laflen, both of Greenleaf; brother, Marlon (Diane) Walter, Palmer; and eight grandchildren. A memorial fund is established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
