Ivan W Hinkle

Ivan Wayne Hinkle, 90, Washington, died Thursday, January 17, 2019 at the Linn Community Nursing Home, surrounded by his family.  Visitation was from 1 to 8 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2019 at Ward Funeral Home, Washington.  The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at the United Methodist Church, Washington.  Rev. Dan Norwood officiated.  Sheila Ouellette was organist and Leland Cook sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were Elisha Guest, Erica Hinkle, Angie Toews, Robert Hinkle, Brice Loomis, Kevin Loomis and Lynn Wagner. Burial was in Washington City Cemetery. Ivan was born January 28, 1928 in Jackson County, Missouri.  At the age of three months, he was adopted by Streper and Clara (Black) Hinkle.  In 1946, he graduated from Washington High School and joined the National Guard in 1948.  He served until 1955, when he was honorably discharged. September 24, 1949, Ivan married Viva Dexter at the Christian Church in Marysville, KS.  Ivan worked as a mechanic for several years, then was co-owner of Hinkle Implement with his brother, Walter.  After selling the business, he worked at the Washington Power Plant, twenty years, retiring in 1993.  In his retirement, he worked part time for Cedar Hills Golf Course. Ivan and Viva spent twenty-two years wintering in Yuma, AZ, where they met numerous people from all over and made many lasting friendships. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister and husband, Laura and Lester Bolejack; brother, Walter Hinkle; daughter-in-law, Patricia Hinkle; and brothers-in-law, Kenneth Rownd, Glen Wollenberg and Gary Pitts. Survivors include his wife, Viva; sons, Steve Hinkle, Wichita, Richard (Mary) Hinkle, Washington; daughter, Cheryl (Daniel) Switzer, Newton; sisters-in-law Loretta Hinkle, McPherson, Mary Rownd, LaCrosse, WI, Carol Knowlden, Prescott, AZ, Ruth Wollenberg, Shawnee and Cathryn Pitts, Boise, ID; seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial fund is established to the United Methodist Church.  Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
