Gayle Bekemeyer, 61, of Washington, Kan., died May 20, 2019 at University of Kansas Medical Center. Visitation wasThursday, May 23, from 1 to 8 p.m., at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 24, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Plymouth, Neb. Pastor Fred Berger officiated. Angie Zulauf played the organ while the congregation sang “On Eagles Wings”, “In Christ Alone”, “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and “Go, My Children, with My Blessings”. The pallbearers were Todd George, Chris George, Dylan George, Brian George, Neil Bekemeyer and Eric Bekemeyer. The honorary pallbearers were Lee Pifer, Paul Dague, Larry Lohrengel, Todd Hughes and Tim Zenger. Burial followed at 1 p.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, west of Linn, Kan. Gayle was born November 11, 1957 at Beatrice, Neb., to Elmer and Shirley (Kirkendall) George. She graduated from Beatrice High School. She worked as a secretary in the Psychology Department at the University of Nebraska and did secretarial and treasurer work for the State of Nebraska. Gayle also helped with the family business. On August 18, 1990 she married Greg Bekemeyer at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Plymouth. She volunteered with 4H and Republican Women of Washington County. Gayle enjoyed crafts, puzzles, traveling and supporting her children in their activities and sports. Survivors include her husband, Greg; four children, Melissa (Brock) Bruna, Greenleaf, Kan., Amanda (Travis) Reith, Clifton, Kan., Matthew Bekemeyer and Courtney Bekemeyer, both of Washington; sister, Bobbi Gudsnuk, Maine; brothers, Mike (Laurie) George, Seward, Neb., and Tony (Betty) George; and one grand-daughter, Maura Bruna. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of St. Paul's Evangelical Church Elders.
