Esther E. Thayer

Esther Eula Thayer, 60, formerly of Washington, died Sunday, May 31, 2020 at St. Lukes in Kansas City, MO. A graveside funeral service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, June 6 at the Brethren Cemetery, Washington. The service will be broadcast on the Ward Funeral Home Facebook page. Esther Eula Thayer was born January 29, 1960 to Charles and Eula (Ditmars) Thayer in Chicago IL. The Thayer family moved back to Eula’s childhood community of Washington, KS in the 1980’s. Esther was taken care of by her mother, Eula until she was no longer able to be caregiver. Esther attended workshop in Greenleaf, KS, for a few years. Next, she lived with Advocacy First in Bonner Springs where the owner’s family, Patrick and Tamera Paine, along with their children Kyler, Kelcie, and Karleigh treated Essie Mae like a daughter/sister even after she was no longer mobile enough to access their services. Esther had special needs and in spite of her limitations, learned to spell and loved to write letters. She remembered names of everyone she spent time with. She recognized and could name members of her large extended family, even if it had been years since she had seen them. Esther never knew a stranger. She learned to play piano and accordion by listening to music. She enjoyed knitting, word finds, latch hook, coloring, and had chapters/long passages of the Bible memorized. While living at Bonner Springs she had a good friend in Jimmy Weatherford, a resident in the same home. They enjoyed watching the Gaithers together. Esther enjoyed volunteering with Civitan Orchids. Family and friends are grateful for the companionate end of life care given by St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO. Esther was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her mother’s sisters Ina Fike, Maud Lengel, and dozens of cousins.
