Ernest "Ernie" Scheetz, 80, Washington, died Thursday, July 19, 2018.Visitation was held Monday, July 23, from noon until 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m.A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 24 at the Washington Christian Church. Rev. Jim Stark and Rev. Ron Brown officiated. The musicians were Dennis Portenier, Britney Scheetz and Taylea Mills. Music included “I Can Only Imagine”, “In the Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.The pallbearers were Matt Leidig, Jeremy Leidig, Travis Lehman, Justin Lehman, Robert Tuma and Trent Tuma.The honorary pallbearers were Mike Jueneman, David Jueneman, Eddie Lundy, Paul Jueneman, Vince Bruna and Linus Linenberger.Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery.Ernie was born May 3, 1938 at Washington, Kan., to Edward and Beulah (Windhorst) Scheetz. He attended Washington schools and joined the U.S. Air Force on April 17, 1957. He was honorably discharged from active duty on April 26, 1961. Ernie and Zetta Marie Leidig, were married February 25, 1962 at the First Methodist Church, Washington by Rev. Grist.He worked for the City of Washington for almost 40 years. After retiring, he did construction work and took pride in keeping several township roads in good condition. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.Ernie volunteered annually for the Shrimp Peel Auction, for the Special Olympics in Topeka, for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Masons.He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Robert, William, Norman, Herald and Jerald; sisters, Ruth and Beth; and grandchildren, Megan and Christopher Scheetz.Survivors include wife Zetta; sons, Lacy (Janeen) Scheetz, Rowlett, Tex., Tracy (Twila) Scheetz, Fairbury, Neb.; four grandchildren, Kyra, Kayli, Britney and Brigham; sister Marilyn Linhardt, Aurora Colo; and brother, Edward Scheetz, Waukesha, Wis.
