Darrel C. Portenier

Darrel C. Portenier, 88, formerly of Washington, died November 18, 2020, at the Linn Community Nursing Home, Linn, KS. Visitation will be held Friday, November 20, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. Mask are required. A funeral service is 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 21 at the Morrowville Christian Church. Burial will be in the Dale Friends Cemetery, Enosdale. Darrel Clare Portenier was born July 28, 1932 on a farmstead near Guide Rock, Nebraska. He was the first born of Ralph and Norma (Burwell) Portenier. As a boy he enjoyed playing basketball and other sports with his brothers, Gail and Gary. They enjoyed singing gospel music accompanied by their mother on the piano. After high school, Darrel began working as a Depot Agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad. His first assignment was Morrowville, KS where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Mayberry and they married October 23, 1955. To this union, they had eight children, four boys and four girls. They moved around often when working with the railroad. Darrel was an elder at the Christian church in Morrowville for many years. He and his wife enjoyed numerous trips to different states and Branson was one of their favorite destinations. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ralph and Norma; his wife, Evelyn; and brother, Gary Portenier. Survivors include his children, Debora (Arnold) Brown, Shari (Scott) Jacobsen, Brad (Donna) Portenier, Doug (Carrie) Portenier, Clayton (Tushaun) Portenier, Lori (Matt) Miller, Troy (Kelly) Portenier, Lisa (Jeff) Sweetser; brother, Gail (Gloria) Portenier; and sister-in-law, Wanda Portenier; twenty-eight grandkids and forty-one great-grandkids. A Memorial fund is established to the Morrowville Christian Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
