Betty Mae Neu, 95, Washington, died December 26, 2024, at Meadowlark Estates in Lawrence, KS.
A funeral service was held 1 p.m., Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Washington.
Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery, east of Washington.
Betty was born in Fairbury, NE on December 12, 1929, to Frank and Edith (Nelsen) Schank. In 1947 she graduated from Hanover High School.
On November 6, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Robert L. Neu at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hanover. They were blessed with a son, Robert M. Neu.
Betty retired from Farm Bureau Insurance in 2016 but continued working part time until 2019. Prior to that, she was employed by the Selective Service Agency from 1952 until 1978. She was the the last selective service employee in the state of Kansas. She closed the office.
She enjoyed working and visiting with people. Betty like KU football and basketball, KC Chiefs, KC Royals and watching a good western on tv. In her spare time she would love working crossword puzzles and doing needlework, but found those activities difficult in recent years with her failing eyesight.
Betty lived with her son and wife for about four years and then two years at Meadowlark Estates in Lawrence.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Bob in 2014; sister, Jackie Hoegner; and infant brother, Ronald Roy Schank; brothers-in-law, Richard Tegethoff, Jerry Brown and Jerry Cloud.
Survivors include her son, Robert M. (Lydia) Neu, Lawrence; grandchildren, Robert J. (Megan) Neu, Jacob B. (Rachele) Neu and Angela Neu; and four great grandchildren, Robert O. Neu “Ozzy”, Eleanor Neu, Rose Aldridge and Jacob J. Neu; sisters, Bonnie Tegethoff, Rogers, AR, Shirley Brown, Topeka, Phyllis “Sharon” (Don) Roberts, Washington and Carol Cloud, Meridian.
A memorial fund is established in her name and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, PO Box 157, Washington, KS 66968.
