Harold William Eggers, 81, of Santa Rosa, California, died Thursday, August 26 at 5 Palms Care Home in Santa Rosa due to pneumonia. A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 11, at the Haddam City Cemetery, Haddam, KS. Pastor Paul Hutchison officiated. Harold was born March 30, 1929, near Haddam, KS, son of William Fredrick and Delia (Serafin) Eggers. He attended country schools at Haddam, Siefert and Weaver. One of his teachers, Opal Jurey Aden, still is living in Lincoln, Nebraska. Harold pursued a Military life instead of graduating from High School. In 1947 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served fourteen years in Japan, Okinawa, Korea and Morocco. In Japan he was in the Air Force Fire Department. He learned the Japanese Language so well that he was an interpreter during the Korean War. On May 8, l953 he married a Japanese lady. They were married until July 1967. Most of his civilian life was spent in California working in the electronic field, especially with telephones. During this time he was learning the German language because he wanted to visit Germany where his parents were born and speak fluently so no one would know that he was a tourist. Survivors include one brother, Roy and wife, Lucille; five nieces and two nephews, Deborah, Delores, Doris, Donna, DeDe, Daniel and Craig; and fourteen great-nieces and nephews. His parents; sisters, Clara, Dorothy and husband, Dorsey; two brothers, Martin and Elmer, preceded him in death. Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
