Darwin D. Pfiester, 71, of Washington, KS, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the Homestead Nursing Home in Washington. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 28, at the United Methodist Church in Washington. The Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiated. Sheila Ouellette played the organ while Leland Cook sang. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery north of Clyde, KS. Darwin was born February 27, 1939, at Cheboygan, Michigan, the son of Frederick and Maxine (Halleck) Pfiester. He graduated from Gladstone High School in 1957. He entered the U.S. Army and served in Korea as a Military Police. Darwin worked as a police officer for the City of Beloit, was an Undersheriff for Jewell County, and was a trooper for the Kansas Highway Patrol from 1970 until retiring in 2000. His father preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Judy, Washington, KS; mother, Maxine Pfiester, Escanaba, MI; four sons, Daniel Pfiester and wife Jennifer, Great Bend, KS, David Pfiester, Salina, KS, Duane Pfiester, Superior, NE, John Lohmeyer and wife Donna, Pensacola, FL; three brothers, Fred Pfiester and wife Barbara, Gladstone, MI, Gary Pfiester and wife Beth, Escanaba, MI, Alan Pfiester, Rapid River, MI; and three grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established to Meadowlark Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
