Harold “Curly” William Stunkel, 65, Palmer, died July 22, 2010, at Cambridge Place, Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 26, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Palmer. Rev. Melba Smith officiated. Anita Singular played the organ while Dr. James Smart sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Under His Wings”. The pallbearers were Jim Fenton, Art Schottel, Leland Cook, John Fenton, Randy Frerking and Ramey Lehman. Burial was in the church cemetery. Harold was born June 17, 1945, at Concordia, Kansas, son of Melvin and Sadie (Bell) Stunkel. He was a dairy farmer for most of his life and later worked for Washington County Public Works and Kansas Department of Transportation. He served in the Army Reserves. Harold enjoyed hunting, wildlife and the outdoors, and his small farm menagerie. On October 12, 1968, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Linn he married Geraldine Long of Clifton. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, James Stunkel, Clifton, KS, Chad (Laura) Stunkel and Toby Stunkel, all of Palmer, KS; two daughters, Jennifer (Dan) Thalmann, Greenleaf, KS, Cassie (Kieran) Wurtz, Clifton; twelve grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene (Mert) Frerking, Herkimer, KS, Shirley (George) Santigo, Salem, MO; and mother-in-law, Betty Long, Linn, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
