John "Junior" R. Werner

John R. "Junior" Werner, 83, died Thursday, December 7, 2017 at the Washington County Hospital. A graveside funeral service was held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 16 at the Washington City Cemetery. Pastor Dan Norwood officiated. Leland Cook sang "Closer Walk With Thee" and "Amazing Grace." Junior was born on May 28, 1934 to Kenneth and Edna (Keefover) Werner of Hanover, KS. He attended school in Hanover and was a graduate of Washington High School. Junior worked for the Kansas State Highway Department after high school and then joined the Navy on Nov. 1953. He was honorably discharged in May 1961. He returned to Washington, and worked for the Kansas State Highway Department where he became supervisor, and retired after 43 years. Junior liked to golf, fish and hunt when time allowed. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of 59 years of marriage; sons John of Lane, KS, Thomas and wife Denise of Pritchett, CO; sister Barbara of Washington; nephews, Chris Crum of Kansas City, KS, Thadd Tremblay of Wichita, KS and niece Megan Tremblay of Kansas City, KS. A memorial fund is established and will be designated later by the family. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
