Ruth C. Funke, 92, of Washington, died August 29, 2017 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington. Visitation will be Thursday, August 31, from noon until 7 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. A prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 1, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Washington. Burial will be in Joy Creek Cemetery west of Hollenberg. Ruth was born May 30, 1925, at Hollenberg, KS, to John and Barbara (Steinlein) Ahlers. She attended school in Hollenberg. On April 29, 1950, she married Verne Funke in Haddam. They had a son, Ronald. Ruth was a devoted wife and mother. She loved taking care of her family, spending time on the farm, working in the yard, and gardening. She enjoyed fixing fresh fried chicken and potato salad in the summer. Ruth was known for her angel food cakes for birthdays. Family dinners and gatherings were a tradition with both Verne and Ruth, including the 4th of July picnics on the farm. Many dinners were served in the dining room at Verne and Ruth’s. The home was a gathering place for everyone. She will be greatly missed. Ruth moved to Washington in 1994. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Verne on May 16, 1994; brothers, infant Bernard Ahlers and Noel Ahlers; sisters, Lucille Ahlers, Dorothy Meyer, Lois Scheele, Naomi Knuppel, and Anna May Herda. Survivors include her son, Ron (Marcia) Funke, Washington; and a sister, Julia Root, Washington. A memorial fund has been established to Friendly Corners or St. Augustine Catholic Church.
