Wilbert Henry William Helms, 92, of Linn, KS, died Saturday, October 3, 2009, at the Linn Community Nursing Home. A Celebration of Life service was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 8, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church west of Linn. Pastor Richard Rikli officiated. Barbara Ruhnke played "Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Jasmine Helms sang "Amazing Grace". Burial was in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were his grandsons, Robert Miller, Joshua Helms, Jason Helms, Nicolaus Helms, Clinton Helms, Eric Helms and Nathan Helms. Wilbert Henry William Helms was born on September 22, 1917 to Ernest and Ella (Meyer) Helms at Strawberry Township, KS. He was baptized in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Linn. Wilbert farmed in the area, retiring at the age of 86. Wilbert also custom combined for many years. He was united in marriage to Lydia Von Lehe on April 21, 1940 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Wilbert was very active in his church; he sang in the choir, was an Elder, Chairman, and trustee and held many positions in the church. He was also a charter member of the Men’s Club. After moving to the Linn Community Nursing Home, he enjoyed participating in all the activities and events and playing the piano and organ. Wilbert was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lawrence and Elden. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lydia; son, Roger Helms and wife Alice of Clifton; daughter Anita Miller and husband Bob of Sun Lakes, Arizona; son, Gene Helms of Linn; a brother, Vernon and wife Eva of Linn; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family at a later time. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
