Evelyn I. Portenier, 77, of Washington, KS, died Sunday, October 11, 2015 at the Centennial Homestead Nursing Home in Washington. Visitation was from 1 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 13, at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service was 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 14 at the Morrowville Christian Church. Rev. Ron Brown officiated. Dennis Portenier was organist and sang “What a Day That Will Be.” The congregation sang “Blessed Assurance” and “I’ll Fly Away.” The pallbearers were her sons, Brad Portenier, Doug Portenier, Clayton Portenier, and Troy Portenier; and her sons-in-law, Arnold Brown, Scott Jacobsen, Matt Miller, and Jeff Sweetser. Burial was in Dale Friends (Enosdale) Cemetery. Evelyn was born January 11, 1938 on the family farm near Enosdale, KS, daughter of Fred and Eva (Colgrove) Mayberry. She attended Excelsior Country School near Enosdale and graduated from Morrowville High School in 1955. On October 23, 1955 she married Darrel Portenier at the Morrowville Christian Church. Evelyn was a wonderful wife and homemaker. She was an artist and painting instructor, also worked as a part-time Depot Agent for the Burlington Railroad and seed corn Plant Supervisor. She was a member of the Morrowville Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband of nearly 60 years, Darrel; children, Debra (Arnold) Brown, Nelson, NE, Shari (Scott) Jacobsen, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Brad (Donna) Portenier, Linn, KS, Doug (Carrie) Portenier, Leavenworth, KS, Clayton (Tushaun) Portenier, Washington, Lori (Matt) Miller, Morrowville, KS, Troy (Thea) Portenier, Tishomingo, OK, and Lisa (Jeff) Sweetser, Linn, KS; twenty-eight grandchildren, and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established to the Morrowville Christian Church. Contributions sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
