Helen McCarty, 99, of Washington, died Monday, December 29, 2008 at the Washington County Hospital. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2009 at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. Pastor Paul Hutchison officiated. Erin Toole was the organist and Rick and Julie Tegethoff sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brian Good, Dallas Smith, Dee Latham, Rick Svoboda, Darren Svoboda, and Mike Boss. Honorary bearers were Don Vineyard, Bob Funke, Glenn Howland, Kasey Smith, Todd Good, Logan Good, and LeRoy Vineyard. Helen was born October 31, 1909 at Marysville, KS, the daughter of Joseph & Mary Svoboda. She attended Marysville public schools. On April 3, 1935 she married James "Bud" McCarty. She lived most of her life in Washington except during WWII when her husband was sent to the European Theatre. She worked for three years at the KU Medical Center and lived in Kansas City, KS. She also worked for Boogaarts Supermarket for 10 years and Kier's Thriftway for 5 1/2 years as a cashier. She loved to serve the public. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening and playing cards. She was best known for her homemade pies. She was a member of the Washington Christian Church, VFW Auxillary, Eastern Star and Wimodausis Club. Survivors include a son, Jack and wife Mary Kaye McCarty of Washington; two granddaughters, Leca Good and husband Brian of Washington, and Tuanja Smith and husband Dallas of Belleville, KS; six great-grandchildren, Samantha, Todd, Logan and Christin Good, Jessica Jones and husband Ahron, and Kasey Smith; and one great-great-grandchild, Ella Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Mary Vineyard, Emilie Kracht, and Josephine Behee; and two brothers, Miles and Joseph Svoboda. A memorial fund has been designated to Autism Speaks. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
