Marie Hoover, 68, of Greenleaf, KS, died Friday, January 16, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. Visitation was Monday, January 19 from Noon to 5 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Greenleaf. A rosary service was 7 p.m., Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 20 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf. Father David Metz and Father James Hoover officiated. Sheila Ouellette, Teryl Goeckel, Reed Wilson and the Sacred Heart Choir provided the music. Hymns were “You Are Mine”, “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman”, “One Bread One Body”, “How Beautiful” and “Going Home.” Pallbearers were Josh Hoover, Justin Hoover, Jerrod Hoover, Alec Hoover, Cyril Martinmaas and Jeff Dankenbring. Honorary pallbearers were Kobe Hoover, Emma Hoover, Noah Hoover, Joel Hoover, Jesse Hoover, Taylor Hoover, Lauren Hoover and Brooks Bowen. Burial was in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Kimeo, KS. John Howard played the bag pipes at the graveside. Marie was born on December 1, 1946 in Faulkton, SD to Henry and Mildred (Dean) Venjohn. She graduated from Polo High School in Polo, SD. On December 22, 1966, Marie was united in marriage to Richard Hoover in Polo, SD. They lived in Hemet, CA, Manhattan, KS, then in 1975 moved to Greenleaf, KS after purchasing Hoover's Inc. Marie helped as bookkeeper for the business. Marie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Wamego Dutch Mill Sweet Adeline's Chorus. She played the organ and led the choir for the church for over thirty years. She thoroughly enjoyed attending Kansas State athletic games. She enjoyed taking trips on the Harley with Rich, and always enjoyed taking the lap around the field on K-State Harley Day. Spending time in her flower gardens was a favorite past time of hers, with the help of her loyal yellow lab, Pedro by her side. Her family was especially important to her, she cherished raising her six children and spending time with her grandchildren. Marie was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, and courageously fought her battle for five years. Survivors include her husband, Richard; six children, Chris Hoover, Greenleaf, Jerry (Jill) Hoover, Washington, KS, Jeff (Kelly) Hoover, Abilene, KS, Mike (Amy) Hoover, Greenleaf, Michelle (Wes) Bowen, Manhattan, KS and Kayla (April Norman) Hoover, Seattle, WA; siblings, Dolores (Edward) Martinmaas and Joseph Venjohn, both of Rapid City, SD; and twelve grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents. A memorial fund has been established to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Meadowlark Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
