Francis L. "Toby" Anderson, 94, died Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the Homestead Nursing Home, Washington, KS. Visitation is from noon until 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 27 at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 28 at Washington Christian Church, Washington. Pastor Jim Stark will officiate. Gay Lynn Manning will accompany Ruth Ann Finlayson as she sings “Beyond the Sunset” and “In the Garden.” Pallbearers are LeRoy Durst, Dean Merritt, Curtis Merritt, Roland McKee, Les Gauby and Gary Gauby. Honorary pallbearers are Ron Montague, Jim Cohorst, Bob Kern and Larry Lohrengel. Burial is in Morrowville Cemetery. Toby was born on August 8, 1920 to Gust and Lena (Carlson) Anderson at Haddam, KS. He graduated from the eighth grade and worked on the family farm. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. Toby was united in marriage to Lola Hanshaw on February 28, 1945. They ran the café in Morrowville for a couple years. Toby went to work for the county department as a motor grader operator. He also maintained several township roads for many years. In his later years, he would attend car auctions with his friend, Jim Cohorst and also liked to buy and sell vehicles. Toby was a member of the Washington Christian Church, American Legion, VFW, and the Moose Club at Marysville. He liked fishing, boating and camping. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Lola in 1986; son, Larry Anderson; brothers, Lloyd Anderson, William Anderson, Glen Anderson; and sisters, Anna Merritt and Merle Lahodny. Survivors include his companion, Peggy Svanda, Washington; son, Rodney Anderson; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Wagoner, Derby, KS; granddaughter, Jessie Anderson; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial Fund established to Washington Christian Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
