Edwin A. Goeckel

Edwin A. Goeckel, 80, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at the Washington County Hospital. A funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 21, 2008, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Washington. Father Jim Hoover and Sister Marilyn Wall officiated. The Eucharistic Minister was Maxine Koehler. Lectors were Carol Russell, Teryl Goeckel and Tom Dragastin. Sheila Ouellette played the organ while Reed Wilson and Dr. James Smart sang “You Raised Me Up”, “Going Home”, “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace” and “Song of Farewell”. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Hanover. Pallbearers were Doug Goeckel, Carol Russell, Andy Goeckel, Alex Goeckel, A.J. Goeckel and Dr. Tom Dragastin. Honorary bearers were Lawrence Goeckel, Henry Goeckel, Jr., Dr. Max Beam, Lavern Goeckel, Carl Koehler, Maurice Goeckel and Ed Koehler. Edwin was born November 27, 1927, near Hanover, Kansas, the son of Albert J. and Rose M. (Koehler) Goeckel. He moved to Washington from Hanover in 1981. Edwin was a farmer and loved working with the land. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labors with everyone in the Washington County community. He was a very gentle and loving person. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include niece, Carol Russell of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; and nephew, Doug Goeckel and wife Teryl of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gilbert; and one sister, Lorene. A memorial fund has been established and contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
