James L. Svanda, 74, died Thursday, November 28, 2013 at the Hanover Hospital, Hanover, KS. Visitation was Friday, December 6, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. A funeral service washeld at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 7, at Ward Funeral Home. Greg Nimmo officiated. Burial was private. James was born September 1, 1939, at Washington, KS, son of Charles L. and Mabel H. (Kochsmeier) Svanda. He attended Washington Schools. James worked for the City of Washington and Washington County. When he retired from the county he was a loader operator. James worked part time for the Conoco Station doing mechanic work. He loved cars. Fords and Mercury’s were his favorites. He was also a skilled carpenter and did remodeling projects in his home. James liked working and keeping busy. On June 9, 1963, he married Carla Binggeli at Frieden’s Lutheran Church in Home City, KS. They were blessed with three sons. Spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren was important to him. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Charles Svanda and Robert Svanda. Survivors include his wife, Carla, Washington; sons, Rick (Diana) Svanda, Jerry (Kelly) Svanda, both of Washington, Jeff Svanda, Haddam; sisters, Velma (Roger) Cornett, Daloris (Wesley) Hitchcock, all of Belleville, Barbara (Lester) Rue, Plattsmouth, NE; sister-in-law, Peggy Svanda, Washington; and four grandchildren, Justin (Stacy) Svanda, Paige Svanda, William Svanda and Owen Svanda. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
