Dollene Hillyer, 86, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville. A Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 31, at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiated. Sheilla Oullette played the organ. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Dollene was born January 22, 1922 in rural Morrowville to John and Goldie (Morris) Menzies. After graduation from high school, Dollene worked for a year at Prell's Café in Morrowville. Her next job was in Lindlsey's grocery store. In 1943 she was hired by Alta Hinnen, clerk of the district court, to work in her office. Dollene worked at the clerk's office off and on for many years and was elected to the office to which she served one year. She stayed on after her term and worked until she retired in February 1987. She had worked a total of 38 years in the court house in various capacities. Dollene also liked to embroider, especially quilt blocks and read. On August 27, 1946, she married Lester Hillyer at Marysville, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gerald and Kenneth Menzies; and two sisters, Bernice Schroeder and Goldie Zimmerman. She is survived by two daughters, Colleen Hillyer of Washington, and Marcia Martin and husband Lawrence of Hanover; and three granddaughters. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
