Ruby Spence, 102, of Washington, KS, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the Homestead Nursing Home, Washington. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 23, at Ward Funeral Home, Washington. Pastor Randy Jellison-Knock officiated. Gay Lynn Manning played the organ while Martha Mosteller sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Amazing Grace." Pallbearers were Clyde Miller, Scott Miller, Brandon Fischer, Nick Fischer, Mike Spence, Mike Hattesohl and Brandon Hattesohl. Burial was in Greenleaf City Cemetery. Ruby was born on July 17, 1910 near Morrowville, KS, to Phillip and Margaret (Cummings) Yager. On June 14, 1931 she was united in marriage to Orville M. Spence at Concordia, KS. They lived most of their married life in Washington County, but did live at Hoxie and in Colorado for a while. Ruby was a homemaker. She loved to cook and always had cookies made for everyone. She loved company and family and everyone was always welcome in her home. She did needlework, crocheting and crocheted Christmas doilies to give to family and friends. Ruby and Orville spent several winters in McAllen, Texas with a group from Washington. She was a member of the Washington Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville; brother, Herman Yager; and sisters, Mildred Barnes, Viola Elder, Edith Materi and Elsie Kranszler. Survivors include her son, Orville D. (Lela) Spence, Washington; daughter, Clara (Dale) Miller, Washington; sister, Leta Heigel, Fairbury, NE; six grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in her name to be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
