WASHINGTON – Melvin L. Howland, 92, Washington, died Friday, January 7, 2005 at the Homestead Nursing Home. He was born December 19, 1912 at Hollenberg, KS to Henry and Elnora Fuller Howland. Melvin was a retired farmer. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Ernest; and five sisters, Ethel Fielder, Arlie Leonard, Ida Singleton, Clara Brenneis and Eileen Fry. Melvin was united in marriage to Katherine Mae Seitz, April 9, 1944, on the farm in Hollenberg. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Glen Howland and wife Shirrolyn of Washington and Ronald Howland and wife Marilyn of Lake George, CO; 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral service was held Monday January 10, 2005 at the Washington Christian Church. Pastor John Frey officiated. Sheila Ouellette was organist and Dr. James Smart sang, How Great Thou Art and The Eastern Gate. Burial was in the Fairbury City Cemetery, Fairbury, NE. Casket bearers were William Wineinger, Jack McCarty, Charles Seitz Jr., Bill Kern, Larry Brenneis, and Kenneth Schoen. A memorial fund was established in his name.
