Donna McVean, 83, died Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Washington County Hospital. A rosary service was held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Greenleaf. A funeral service was 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, as Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Greenleaf. Fr. David Metz officiated. Sheila Ouellette was the organist. Marie Hoover and Teryl Goeckel sang “How Beautiful” and the choir sang “Here I Am Lord”, “You Are Mine”,“Hail Mary, Gentle Woman”, “May the Angels be Your Guide” and “Be Not Afraid.” The pallbearers were Nathan Edgar, Garett Edgar, Pat McGatlin, Richard Hoover, Chuck Depew and Steve Stewart. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Donna was born August 11, 1928 at Washington, KS, to Charles and Genevieve (Spence) Depew. She attended school in Greenleaf and graduated from Greenleaf High School. Donna worked as a cook for the Greenleaf School system. She also cooked for the Greenleaf Legion, Greenleaf Café and Barnes Schools. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She belonged to the Altar Society and sang in the church choir. Donna loved life, family and friends. She would put others and their needs first. She enjoyed going to all her children and grandchildren’s sporting and school events. She was a big KU Jayhawk fan, watching all the basketball games on television. Donna would exercise and walk when she could, planted flowers, enjoyed listening to music and could make the best pies. On July 25, 1955, she was united in marriage to James L. McVean at Greenleaf. He preceded her in death on June 12, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother; and an infant sister. Survivors include her daughters, Regina (Jeff) Brabec, Washington, Mary (Tom) McGroarty, Dodge City, KS, and Patricia McVean, Wichita, KS; son, Cam (Rachel) McVean, Greenleaf; brother, Connie Depew, Wheaton; sister, Bonnie Longerbeam, Lisbon, IA; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established to the Washington County Hospital. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
