HADDAM – Caroline B. Novak, 95, of Haddam, KS, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 13, at Ward Funeral Home in Washington, KS. Burial will follow in the Haddam City Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Novak was born June 6, 1912, near Haddam, KS, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Harvey) Bertram. She married Wayne Smith in 1935. He passed away in 1939. She then married Vic Novak in 1947. He passed away in 1960. Caroline had a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the University of Kansas. During her first marriage she worked at the John Deere dealership in Clay Center. She later taught at the rural Albian School for two years and Howard Rural Country School for one year. Then she attended cosmetology school and worked as a beautician. During her second marriage, she returned to teaching at the Haddam School, where she retired at the age of 72. For her many years of teaching she received a Lifetime Teachers Certificate. Caroline enjoyed working on the farm with her family. She really enjoyed her black cattle and her beloved Kansas Jayhawks basketball team. She also enjoyed bowling, bingo and cards. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Wayne Smith and Vic Novak; three brothers, William Henry Bertram, Oscar Bertram and Lloyd Bertram; and one sister, Nora Hynek. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date.
