Washington - Nettie E. Funke, 95, died Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the Washington County Hospital, Washington. Nettie was born April 24, 1912 to John and Dora (Hertzfeld) Godden on a farm near Narka, Kansas. She moved with her parents at the age of six to Nebraska, receiving her education and later teaching in rural schools of Jefferson County, Nebraska. Nettie married Louis Funke on April 29, 1933 at Marysville, Kansas. To this union six children were born. They lived seven years on a farm near Hollenberg then moved to Washington. Nettie loved the outdoors, gardening, flowers, outdoor sports, camping and fishing. In 1960, after purchasing the Western Auto Store, she worked beside her husband until they retired in 1969. They enjoyed traveling over the United States, spending several winters at Mission and McAllen Texas until her husband passed away. After his passing, Nettie later enjoyed taking tours over most of the United States. She was a charter member of the Pythian Sister Lodge of Steele City, NE., A member of women’s Sunday School class and she was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she was active serving as treasurer of UMW, Communion steward and offices in Methodist circles. Nettie was preceded in death by her parents; sisters; Lillian Shimek and Helen Godden in infancy; brothers Doyle and Roy Godden; and a grandson, Jacob Wohlers. She is survived by daughters, Phyllis Sweetland and husband Von, Washington, Glenda Tegethoff and husband Duane, Topeka, Debra Wohlers and husband David, Kirksville, MO; sons, Robert Funke and wife Judy, Gary Funke and wife Mary Kay, all of Washington, Loren Funke, Kingston, MO; 20 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. The funeral service for Nettie was held at 2:00 pm., Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at the United Methodist Church, Washington. Pastor Phil Morris officiated. Burial was in Washington City Cemetery. Casket bearers were David Funke, Donald Funke, Brent Tegethoff, Clint Stamm, David Holmes, and Michael Ashburn. Honorary bearers were Doug Funke, Joshua Wohlers, Mike Deger, Danny Sweetland, Robbie Sweetland, Devon Wohlers, and Nathan Wohlers. A memorial has been established to be designated at a later time.
