Boliver Hyland, 92, Haddam, died March 28, 2011 at the Homestead Nursing Home, Washington. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 2 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Washington. The musicians were Janet Fritschi and Dr. James Smart. Music included “Here I Am Lord”, “Amazing Grace”, “On Eagles Wings”, “Song of Farewell” and “How Great Thou Art”. The pallbearers were Tom Walton, Ben Walton, Haley Walton, Emily Hyland, Hannah Walton and Melissa Hyland. Burial was in St. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery north of Morrowville with Military Funeral Honors provided by Ft. Riley. Boliver was born August 8, 1918 at Wisner, Nebraska, to Robert and Marie Caroline (Braun) Hyland. He graduated from Haddam High School in 1936. On May 20, 1948 he married Phyllis Fencil at Clyde, Kansas. During World War II he served in the European Theater and received the Purple Heart. Boliver enjoyed showing pictures for traveling picture shows, working at Frye Automotive and the Mobil Filling Station in Haddam. He also worked as a custodian for USD #221 North Central School until retiring at age 65. He also enjoyed helping the community of Haddam whether it was serving on the Haddam Volunteer Fire Department, City Council or Honor Guard for the American Legion. He helped coach kids sports and would give youth golf lessons for 25¢ and would provide the balls. Boliver liked golfing, fishing and hunting. His family was very important to him. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; five brothers and four sisters. Survivors include two sons, Bruce Hyland, Tucson, Ari., and Jess (Mary) Hyland, Austin, Minn.; one daughter, Alice (Tom) Walton, Libertyville, Ill.; and five grandchildren.
